Here's what you'll need to make easy birthday cake decorations with Cricut

How to make easy birthday cake decorations with Cricut

To get started making an easy birthday cake topper, open Cricut Design Space and start a new project. Type the word or number you want to use. The script font I used is Renatta Walters. Most of the letters are connected with except for the letter T.

I used a free design in the Cricut Design Space library to connect the Letter T. The outline of the star works perfect to join together any disconnected letters and add extra stability. When designing DIY cake toppers, the goal is to join together the whole design so it cuts as one.

Add the design to a few places to join all the letters together. I like the concept of three so I added 3 stars to my DIY cake topper for visual interest. Zoom in to double check everything is touching before moving onto the next step.

Once you have everything in place and ready, select the whole design and click on the Weld tool on the bottom right side of Design Space. This will join together all the pieces so they cut as one. At this point, the design is ready to be cut by Cricut.

Prepare to cut your easy birthday cake decorations with Cricut by adding cardstock to a Cricut mat. The type of mat you need depends on the type of paper. For glitter cardstock, I use a less sticky StrongGrip Cricut mat to be sure the cardstock is secure on the mat. Load the mat into Cricut and let the machine do the hard work.

Assemble your easy birthday cake decorations

After the cut is complete, use a spatula to remove the cut cardstock from the mat. All that is left to complete your easy birthday cake decorations is to add the cake topper stick. Look over your project and find a good spot to add the cake topper stick. I choose the center of the letter W and added a clear acrylic lollipop stick. To secure the stick to the cake topper, use hot glue.

Easy Birthday Cake Decorations with Cricut FAQs

What is the best paper to use for DIY birthday cake toppers?

Glitter or foil cardstock work really well for a single layer DIY cake topper. Both glitter and foil cardstock are sturdy on their own and do not need extra support. Any cardstock that is thick would work well as a single layer DIY cake topper. Lightweight (65lb) cardstock will be more difficult to work with and may need more than one stick to stay upright.

What kind of stick do you use for cake toppers?

There are several options for DIY cake topper sticks. My favorite include acrylic lollipop sticks, study paper cake pop sticks or wooden skewers. Acrylic sticks are clear and work well with lightweight designs such as the easy birthday cake decorations in this tutorial. Paper cake pop sticks are usually white in color and can hold more weight than the acrylic sticks. These work well for shaker cake toppers or cake toppers with lots layers. Wooden skewers are usually a natural wood color and work similarly to the sturdy paper cake pop sticks.
