One frequent question I receive about the cake topper projects I make with my Cricut machine is – what are the best sticks for cake toppers? There are a wide variety of options you can use for cake topper sticks, a few you may already own.

What should you think about before shopping for cake topper sticks?

The best sticks for your cake topper may depend more on the cake topper and the cake.

For example, a bright white stick may stand out a lot against a dark colored cake and cake topper. On the other hand, if you are planning a large cake topper with lots of layers and add-ons, you want a sturdy stick that can hold the topper steady.

Best sticks for cake toppers that you have at home

All of these cake topper stick options can be found in your kitchen and, better yet, they are all eco-friendly: biodegradable or made from sustainable resources.

Paper straws

Colorful paper straws are stiff enough to work as cake topper sticks. These can be easily trimmed to any size needed.

Wooden Bamboo skewers

Skewers, like the kind used for kabobs, work well as cake topper sticks. Although, I would skip the 12 inch long skewers and use the 6 inch sized option.

Bamboo toothpicks

Toothpicks are a common household must have that you are probably already familiar with. These are very thin pieces of wood that could break easily with a heavy weight. Luckily, cardstock is lightweight and toothpicks are sized well for cupcake toppers.

Sturdiness: lightweight strength

Best sticks for cake toppers that you can buy

If you are ready to up the game on your cake toppers, there are a couple of sticks options to enhance the look of your cake topper projects.

Acrylic Cakesicle Sticks

I’ve recently discovered a new favorite choice for sticks – the Acrylic Cakesicle Sticks. These sticks are very sturdy, and what sets them apart is their flat, like a popsicle stick. I’ve found them to be a perfect fit when placing them between layers to hide the stick for a more professional look. To achieve this look, use foam tabs between the layers to create space and secure the stick in between the layers.

Acrylic cake pop sticks

These are thin, clear acrylic and have a clean, chic vibe that I love.

If you are like me, you love to save special projects. These sticks are easy to clean and can be reused. I save my kids birthday cake toppers in their memory books.

The acrylic cake pop sticks are thin and work great for lightweight cake toppers like this sunshine cake topper. Oftentimes, I use two of these thin sticks for a cake topper – one on each side of the topper. I skip these sticks for heavy cake toppers like large shaker projects because they are little flimsy. For cupcake toppers, I cut acrylic cake pop sticks in half for a shorter length.

Paper Cake Pop Sticks

Despite the word paper in the name, paper cake pop sticks are very sturdy and can hold large cake toppers well. The paper is more like dense cardboard. These sticks are not flimsy at all and are a little thicker compared to the acrylic cake pop sticks.

I have used the paper cake pop sticks for 6 inch wide shaker cake toppers and they work great.

Here's What You'll Need To Make a light up cake topper

In addition to your regular cake topper materials like cardstock, sticks, and glue, you’ll also need some lights. My preferred lights for making light up cake toppers are balloon lights.

These multicolor LED balloon lights are really small and lightweight, but they shine brightly and even change colors. Moreover, they come with a little tab on the back that you can pull out to turn on the light. And if you want to save the battery, you can insert the tab back in.

Above all, using these small lights is easy – just a bit of hot glue and a dedicated spot in your cake topper design to place the light. Although I haven’t used these lights continuously, the product description indicates they can last over 48 hours, which is more than enough time for a party or event.

How to design light up cake toppers

Jump over to Cricut Design Space, and I’ll show you an easy way to add balloon lights to your cake toppers. In this example, I have a 6-inch circle I am using as the bottom base layer of a cake topper.

Now, for the balloon lights, we need to make a small hole for the light to go in. Use the shapes tool on the left side of Cricut Design Space to select a circle shape. Then adjust the size of the circle to 0.5 inches. This is just the right size for the balloon light.

Next, place this little circle where you want the light to be on your cake topper. Now is the time to decide if you want the light to be hidden behind something else or to shine right out. Once you’re happy with the spot, select both circles and click “slice.” As a result, this creates a dedicated space for the balloon light to sit perfectly.

Other Design considerations for light up cake toppers

If you decide to place some of your design in front of the balloon light, like I did in my light up cake topper project, remember that the light will stick out a bit. Consequently, you’ll need to raise the part of the design that’s in front of the light to make room for the light extending from the back.

As an example, one way to do this is by making a shaker cake topper, whether you include the shaker pieces or not. For that reason, I made a shaker topper with a deep side wall and no foam for my project. This gives enough space for the light to fit comfortably.

How to add the light

Once you’ve got all your pieces cut with your Cricut machine, it’s time to put your cake topper together. Remember, the spot for the light should be on the bottom layer of the cake topper. You’ll want it accessible from the back so you can add the light once the rest of the project is assembled. Next, proceed with assembling the light up cake topper project – minus the light.

Immediately following the assembly process, you can add the light. To begin, put a ring of hot glue on the back of the cake topper, right around the hole for the light. Then, place the balloon light into the hole. It won’t go all the way through, but it’ll sit nicely inside. Lastly, allow the hot glue to set, and your light is all set to shine!

What is the Maximum Thickness of Foam that Cricut can Cut?

The amazing thing about Cricut is that it can cut materials that are up to 2.4 mm thick. When it comes to craft foam, which is usually around 2 mm thick, you’re in luck! As long as the craft foam fits under the machine roller bar, you’re all set to go. So, you can easily cut craft foam with accuracy and precision without any worries.

Best tips and tricks to cut craft foam with Cricut for shaker cake toppers

When it comes to cutting craft foam with your Cricut machine for shaker cake toppers, there are a few helpful tips and tricks to keep in mind. First, use a sticky mat, such as a green or purple mat, that still has a lot of stickiness left on it. Craft foam is thick, so you want to ensure it stays in place during the cutting process. To secure the foam even more, use a brayer to press it firmly onto the mat.

It’s important to note that the small white rings on the roller bar of your Cricut machine are called star wheels. While they’re great for preventing materials from shifting, they can leave track marks on thicker materials like craft foam. Be sure to move the star wheels off to the side to avoid contact with the craft foam.

Lastly, in Cricut Design Space, use the Mat Preview screen to check that your images don’t extend beyond the boundaries of your craft foam. This way, you can ensure a clean and precise cut.

What material settings do you use in Cricut Design Space for craft foam?

When setting the material for cutting craft foam on your Cricut machine, there are a few important steps to follow. In general, I recommend using the material setting of craft foam with more pressure. However, when using the rotary blade, you’ll need to select the material setting for flex foam with more pressure.

To set the material, start by clicking on “Browse All Materials” in Cricut Design Space. Then, search for and select “craft foam.” Click “Done” to confirm. Next, update the pressure setting to “More” to ensure a successful cut. In Design Space, you’ll notice that the deep point blade is listed for craft foam, but if you prefer, you can also select “Edit Tools” to switch to the knife blade for cutting.

I hope by following these steps, you’ll be able to set the material setting correctly and achieve precise results when cutting craft foam with your Cricut machine.

What blade do you use to cut craft foam with Cricut for shaker cake toppers?

I tested four different Cricut blades with craft foam.

Deep point blade: Compatible with Cricut Maker and Cricut Explore Machines
Knife Blade: Compatible with Cricut Maker/3 Machines
Rotary Blade: Compatible with Cricut Maker/3 Machines
Fine Point Blade: Included with all Cricut machines

The results are in!

Deep point blade

Cut the craft foam cleanly on the first try without any issues.

Knife blade

Cut the craft foam cleanly on the first try without any issues.

Rotary blade

Cut the craft foam on the first try and left behind small cuts at corners where the blade overlapped.

Fine Point Blade

Did not cut the craft foam at all.

Based on my test, I concluded that the Deep point blade and Knife blade are the best to cut craft foam with Cricut for shaker cake toppers. Both blades provided clean and precise cuts of thick craft foam. The Deep point blade works well on both the Cricut Explore models as well as the Cricut Maker models. The Knife blade is only compatible with the Cricut Maker model machines.

Today, I want to show you how to make really fun no foam shaker cake toppers. This design includes deep side walls which allows for a lot of space between the bottom and top layers. In fact, these cake toppers have half an inch of space for you to fill up with anything you like.

This project is a great cake topper base that can be dressed up for any theme or celebration. Once we finish making it, we’re going to test out 5 unique items as filler for the shaker. I hope it gives you some ideas for your own cake toppers. Download the free SVG file to get started.

What can I put inside no foam shaker cake toppers?

The neat thing about these no foam shaker cake toppers is that they have deep side walls. In fact, it’s got half an inch of space for you to fill up with anything you like. So far I have added a variety of items into the deep side walled shakers such as:

Chunky Glitter
Candy
Legos
Large Party Confetti
Fuzzy 1/2″ Pom Poms
Rolled Flowers Cut From My Cricut Machine

Materials And Tools Needed To Make No Foam Shaker Cake Toppers

No foam shaker cake topper cut file
Cricut machine
Cricut machine mat
Scoring wheel or scoring stylus
Cardstock (at least one sheet of 12×12 cardstock for the strips)
Acetate
Craft glue
Shaker filler of your choice

The first thing we need to do is get the SVG cut file we’ll use to cut out our project. Once you’ve opened Cricut Design Space, start a new project and click on the “upload” button to add the design file. Follow through the upload process to get the cut file onto your canvas.

If you need to, zoom out so you can see the whole project. We want to make sure the project is the right size, so click on one of the big round shapes and make sure it is 6.8 inches.

Now, we need to make a few adjustments. This project has score lines on the two strips, but Cricut Design Space doesn’t allow us to upload them as score lines. So, we’ll change the lines from cut to score.

To do this, select one of the lines and hold down the shift key, then click on the next line. Keep selecting the lines until they’re all chosen. Then, change the operation to score. Now you can see that the lines have changed to dashed on the strips.

Next, select the strips and the score lines and click on “attach”. This connects all the score lines to the correct shapes.

Before we move on, now is a good time to adjust any of the colors if we want to. We’re ready to move on to the next step of the no foam shaker cake topper project.

Before we jump ahead, one quick review of the design. The light blue circle is the window of the no foam shaker cake toppers. This shape will be cut using acetate.

The two strips and the large circle are cut with cardstock and together those will create the base structure of the cake topper to include the shaker. The strips will be used to create space between the bottom cardstock and top acetate. The strips are just about 11.5 inches long and are best cut out from a sheet of 12×12 cardstock.

Finally, we have two rings that will cover up the tabs underneath and give the cake topper a nice finishing touch.

How To Assemble No Foam Shaker Cake Toppers

Now that you have all your pieces cut out, let’s put the no foam shaker cake topper together. Grab the two strips and line them up straight with the pretty side facing up. Glue them together using the tab at one end.

Start at one side of the long paper strip and fold over each tab one at a time. Then, curve the paper strip into a ring and glue the tab at the end to close the circle.

Now it’s time to create the shaker part. Apply glue around the inside edges of the tabs you just folded over and place the circle base inside the paper strip ring you just created. Make sure it’s well adhered by checking the back to see if all the tabs are flat.

Next, fold over the remaining tabs around the outside edge and make sure they’re flat and even.

Moving on to the fun part – time to add your shaker filler! You have a lot of space to work with, so go wild.

Once you’ve added your filler, add glue around the edges and place the acetate sheet on top. Make sure it’s secure.

Finally, add the two rings to finish it off. Start with the thicker ring and then add the thin one. Now you can add a name, age or sentiment to the front and a cake pop stick to the back. And voila, your no foam shaker cake topper is complete!

How to prepare rolled flowers for this project

Your cricut machine can help you make paper flowers for this project. I searched the Cricut image library for 3D flowers to find a design. Size your paper flowers between 3 and 4 inches wide to get the right size for the no foam shaker cake topper.

Another tip: Sometimes cutting small rolled paper flower designs can be tough. Be sure to use a brayer to make sure your cardstock is secured well to the mat. Also, you can try the material setting of cardstock (for intricate cuts) for better results.

If you’ve ever worked with shaker cake toppers, you may have noticed how frustrating it can be to deal with static cling on the acetate. If you are looking for a solution, you’re in luck! Today, I’m going to share with you a test I did to reduce static cling and achieve a free flowing shaker cake topper.

When I first started making shaker cake toppers, I was excited to create something special. But as soon as I got the project assembled, I faced a frustrating problem – static cling inside my shakers. The glitter would stubbornly stick to the acetate window and refuse to move, making my shaker almost ‘shake’-less. I tried to find a solution online, but I couldn’t find much information.

How is acetate used for cake toppers?

Before we get started, let’s chat about how acetate is used for cake toppers. Acetate is a clear, plastic-like material that is commonly used in shaker cake toppers. Acetate is the window into the shaker to see the fun filler inside. However, it can be prone to static cling, which makes it difficult for the glitter to move around freely inside the shaker.

Ways to clean acetate to reduce static cling

I tested three different cleaning methods to see which one works best in reducing static cling from the acetate. The methods used were alcohol swabs, glass cleaner, and dish soap.

Alcohol Swab Method:

I started by using an alcohol swab to clean both sides of the acetate. I made sure to dab it onto a paper towel to dry it off since the swab made it quite wet.

Glass Cleaner Method:

Next, I sprayed a little bit of glass cleaner onto a paper towel and cleaned both sides of the acetate.

Dish Soap Method:

Lastly, I used dish soap to clean the acetate. Since dish soap requires water, I applied the soap on both sides of the acetate and rinsed it off.

Which method works best to clean acetate and what didn't work well

After assembling the shakers with one layer of craft foam, I was excited to see the final results. Here’s what I found:

Shaker 1: Pink – This piece was not cleaned with anything, and the small glitter stuck to the acetate, making it look blotchy.

Shaker 2: Green – This piece was cleaned with an alcohol swab, and the glitter sticks much less to the acetate, making it look cleaner.

Shaker 3: Yellow – This piece was cleaned with glass cleaner and looks pretty good. It’s about the same as the green shaker.

Shaker 4: Blue – This piece was cleaned with dish soap, but surprisingly it’s the worst one. The small glitter is really stuck to the acetate, making it look messy.

best method to reduce static cling for shaker cake toppers: The Results

In the end, the alcohol swab and glass cleaner methods worked best in reducing static cling on acetate, resulting in cleaner and more free flowing shaker cake toppers.

It’s important to note that the type of glitter used can also make a difference in the final result. I also tested the cleaning methods with chunky glitter and shakers with deeper side walls, and the results were different, with all four shakers looking about the same.

How much do I price Cricut cake toppers to sell? Is a question I hear often from other crafters. Maybe you started by searching for what other people are charging for similar cake toppers. But you don’t know for sure if that price actually makes sense for your business.

Why do I need a strategy to price Cricut cake toppers?

Don’t I just add up the material cost to figure out the price?

Even though you love crafting, pricing your Cricut cake toppers too low can actually cause you to lose money and get burned out over time. You deserve to be paid fairly for your hard work.

However, it can be difficult to determine the right price for your items, since there are many factors to consider such as material costs, listing fees, shipping costs, and the value of your time. By taking all of these factors into account and creating a solid pricing strategy, you can ensure that your Cricut cake topper business is successful and sustainable.

How do I create my strategy to price Cricut cake toppers to sell?

There are a variety of different thoughts on how to price your homemade crafts that you can find online. Etsy suggests calculating profit margins by:

subtracting all of the expenses that go into creating a product (cost of goods) from the sale price, and then dividing that number by the sale price (revenue) and multiplying by 100 to generate gross profit margin as a percentage.

But what really goes into the “cost of goods”? materials, your time, fee’s, shipping, packaging?

For Melissa, this is what she includes in her pricing:

Listing fees ($0.20), Transaction fees (6.5%), Processing fees (3%), Shipping (if it's included in the listing price - mine are usually $3-$5 per item), materials (my glue/adhesive numbers are estimates - I don't actually figure out how many ounces of glue I use), my time (assembling time only - not cutting or packaging time), I don't include any marketing/promo material costs because I include that separate on my taxes.

How to price Cricut cake toppers to sell?

With the cake topper price calculator spreadsheet, you can determine with confidence the right way to price Cricut cake toppers to sell.

Once you open the spreadsheet, you’ll see some gray boxes where you need to fill in your information. For example, you’ll need to add how much you want to make per hour and how long it takes you to make each topper.

Next, you’ll go to the materials section and add in all the materials you used, along with their costs and how many you used. This helps you figure out how much it costs you to make each topper.

Then you move down to the sale price calculation section. The material cost is copied over from the already calculated material cost. The next line says x .25 and this is where you add in a little extra to cover things like fees, ink, and wear and tear on your cutting machine.

Once you’ve filled out all the info, the spreadsheet will calculate the wholesale price and the retail price for you. You can also adjust the markup percentage to fit your needs. And if you’re adding shipping, you can add that cost too and the spreadsheet will update the final price for you.

I tried it out with my Woodland Fairy cake topper and it turned out to be $28 retail price and $33 with shipping. Give it a try and see how much you should price Cricut cake toppers to sell!

What happens if the price of my Cake Topper seems too high?

So now that we know how to price out your cake toppers to sell, you might be wondering how you can make them even more affordable. Let me share a few ideas that can help bring down the cost of the materials you use.

Buy in bulk: You can compare the cost of buying individual sheets versus packs of material and see which one is cheaper.
Buy sales: You can sign up for email lists from your favorite suppliers, and they’ll let you know when they’re having a sale so you can stock up on materials at a discounted price.
Reduce your time: To save time on making cake toppers, you can try assembling them in batches. This means you cut out the same pieces for multiple projects and put them together at once, instead of doing each project one by one.
Accept less custom requests: If you stick to making a few favorite designs rather than always doing custom orders, you can save money by not having to buy extra materials for each project. You’ll be able to anticipate the materials you need to take advantage of sales.

What happens if you don’t use a whole sheet of cardstock and have enough left over to use for another project?

I asked Melissa the same question and here is how she handles it:

Since the cost of a single sheet of cardstock isn't that much, and I try to get the most out of each sheet, I consider each sheet I make any cuts on as one sheet of paper.

How to include printer ink for print then cut?

In the sales price calculations section of the cake topper price calculator, there’s a calculation for unaccounted for fees and costs. This should cover your printer needs, but if you do a lot of print then cut work and need more ink, you can increase the small upcharge from .25 to .5. That way, you’ll be sure to cover your printer ink costs when pricing your Cricut cake toppers.

Something no one tells you about crafting with a Cricut machine is the technical side of things. And if you do not have naturally strong skills with a computer (and even if you do), learning something like Cricut can seem overwhelming when you are new to it or trying to level up.

Learn to use Cricut with The Complete Cricut Machine Handbook

It took me years to become comfortable with my Cricut machine. I understand how challenging it can be for beginners to master their Cricut machine. That’s why I am always on the lookout for resources that can help new Cricut users.

Recently, I had the opportunity to review The Complete Cricut Machine Handbook by Angie Holden of www.thecountrychiccottage.net, a guidebook specifically tailored for beginners.

This 192-page book is packed with helpful information and tips for new Cricut users, covering everything from the basics of setting up and using a Cricut machine to more advanced techniques for working with different materials.

The book reviews the top most common materials cut on a Cricut machine, including paper, vinyl, HTV, Infusible Ink and fabric. It also goes in-depth on techniques for creating stencils and the print-then-cut feature.

The print-then-cut feature is a powerful tool that allows you to print an image on your home printer and then have your Cricut machine cut it out. It can be used to create unique cake toppers, invitations, cards and more.

Cricut Handbook: Getting started

The book starts with opening the Cricut machine box box and describes what you can expect to be included. The author explains what to expect from the process of how to set up a new Cricut machine and the website to go to download Cricut Design Space. Angie Holden’s book is a great review of the basics of all Cricut cutting machines, including the cutting size limits for each machine.

One of my favorite parts of the book was page 11, where the author explains the different Cricut machine parts such as the Go button and Pause button and what they are used for. The book also explains what the inside of a Cricut machine looks like and what each piece of hardware is used for, such as the two roller bars and white star wheels.

I appreciate that the book explains that a Cricut owner does not need to use Cricut-specific materials and offers suggestions for other brands to explore. The book also explains the different blades that work in each Cricut machine model.

One thing I learned from the book is that the author, Angie Holden, does not recommend using the bonding fabric blade with the Cricut Maker. Angie explains that the rotary blade is best for the Maker and that it does not come with the Cricut Maker 3 model as it did with the original Cricut Maker machine.

The book provides a great explanation of Cricut mats and how to care for them. Another tip I learned is that the pink fabric mat uses a different kind of adhesive than all other mats, which means it requires special care and can’t be cleaned in the same way. The book also includes a glossary of terms that will help any Cricut crafter.

Cricut Handbook: Paper Crafting

As a Cricut crafter that loves working with paper, I was impressed with the section of the book dedicated to paper crafting. The author recommends that new Cricut crafters start with paper as papercrafts are simple to start with and the material can be cut with the fine point blade, which is included with all Cricut machines.

Angie Holden does a great job reviewing different types of paper and their quality, explaining cut settings, and troubleshooting steps. She also provides a variety of glue options to use with paper projects.

The paper crafting section of the book includes simple beginner-friendly projects that don’t require any special cut files, making it perfect for new crafters to practice their design skills. The author guides the reader through each step of the projects, which makes it easy for anyone to follow along and create their own beautiful paper crafts.

Cricut Handbook: Print then cut

Another section I am impressed with discussed Cricut’s Print-Then-Cut feature. The book reviews the different machines that are compatible with the print then cut feature and explains the difference in sensors. The book also lists a variety of printable materials that can be used along with the print then cut feature.

The book demystifies the process of how the print then cut feature works with your at-home printer and the print size limitations. The author also explains when to use the sometimes-confusing “add bleed” option and provides a list of troubleshooting ideas for when things don’t work as expected.

What I found particularly helpful in this book were the included example projects. The author provides step by step instructions for making stickers and a unique chipboard puzzle project. Both projects are not only fun to make but also a great way to practice and to learn to use a Cricut machine.

Is a handbook worth it?

Overall, The Complete Cricut Machine Handbook is a comprehensive guide and an excellent resource for beginners to learn to use a Cricut machine. It is well-organized, easy to understand, and filled with valuable information that can help you take your Cricut projects to the next level.

Cricut tools for the wife just getting started

Cricut Bundles are a fantastic deal that include both a Cricut machine and a bunch of materials to get a new Cricut crafter started. The Cricut Bundle deals are a way to grab a ton of value for a great price. If all the machines, tools and materials within bundles are sold separately, they cost more than the bundle price.

Cricut’s newest cutting machines have the option to use ‘smart’ vinyl without a cutting mat and can cut up to 12 feet long. This bundle deal includes materials to help get the most out of the Cricut Explore Air 3 and Cricut Maker 3.

In addition to a bundle, the basic Cricut tool set and brayer are incredibly helpful tools for Cricut crafts of all kinds. The tool set includes five essential tools for Cricut crafts: precision scissors, weeding tool, spatula, scraper and reverse tweezers. I use the spatula tool to remove just about everything from my Cricut mats.

The brayer tool is often overlooked by Cricut crafters and I admit, I overlooked the brayer tool for a while too. After using the tool, I see how the brayer helps extend the life of the Cricut mats and also help ensure perfect cuts by securing materials well to the mat.

Speaking of Cricut mats, make sure your new Cricut crafter has a set of Cricut mats for all common materials. Luckily, Cricut offers a variety pack set of mats that come in three different strengths: light grip, standard grip and strong grip. The type of Cricut mat needed depends on the type of material to be cut.

General tools for the wife that already loves Cricut

For the Cricut crafter that already owns a cutting machine, here are other products used along with a Cricut machine.

Check out the Cricut Machine Tool Organizer. This a helpful little container to organize all the Cricut machine blades. If the crafter you are shopping for has a Cricut Maker 3, the Machine Tool Organizer is really helpful for the interchangeable quick swap blade tips used with the maker.

If you are getting started making paper crafts, there are a few secrets you must know to make cake toppers. Here are 5 tips to help you get started with Cricut cake toppers.

What is the best cricut machine to make cake toppers?

Any Cricut cutting machine has the ability to make a cake topper: Cricut Maker 3, Cricut Explore Air 3 or Cricut Joy.

However, not all Cricut machines are created equal.

See the guide below to help you make the best decision on which Cricut machine works best for you.

Cricut Explore Air 3 (best value)

The Explore Air 3 gets the #1 slot for cake toppers. If cake toppers and paper crafts are the type of projects you want to make, then the Cricut Explore Air 3 is the best value to meet all your needs. Here are the specific features used with cake toppers and paper crafts:

Capable of cutting craft foam (useful for shaker cake toppers)
Print then cut feature (useful for adding character images to cake toppers)
Scoring stylus capable (useful for favor boxes, cards and envelopes)
Maximum cut size of 11.7 inches wide

Cricut Maker 3 (cuts 300+ materials)

The Cricut Maker 3 can do everything the Explore Air 3 can plus more. Which cardstock should I use to make cake toppers

Another of the secrets you must know to make cake toppers is that the paper you use can make your break your project.

Construction paper is not a good quality paper and does not cut cleanly. If possible, avoid construction paper and you will avoid the unnecessary frustration of terrible cuts.

Save your sanity and pick up cardstock online or at most craft stores. Cardstock comes in a wide variety of weights and textures.

Cardstock weight refers to the thickness of the cardstock. The higher the weight the thicker the cardstock

65 lb (176 gsm) = thin or lightweight cardstock
110 lb (298 gsm) = thick or heavyweight cardstock

You might be thinking I need thick cardstock to make cake toppers. Well, sure you can use a thick 110 lb cardstock but heavy cardstock is not necessary and can be more challenging to cut small pieces.

Depending on the type of cake topper project, many cake topper projects use layers upon layers. The layers add up and create plenty of stability for your cake topper.

The exception to this rule is the one cut or welded word cake topper. If the cake topper design is one layer, then choose a heavy cardstock or glitter cardstock for support.

Ready to go shopping for cardstock? There are more secrets you must know to make cake toppers at the craft store.

You might be surprised to learn that there are lots of different cardstock textures available.

To name a few: smooth texture, linen texture, canvas texture, glitter, foil, metallic.

Who knew paper came in so many options?! After all, it’s just paper. The great news is that your Cricut machine can cut all different kinds of cardstock.

Your creativity can really shine when mixing cardstock textures to add dimension to paper crafts.

This cake topper uses three different types of cardstock:

Smooth cardstock for the rainbow colors
Gold Glitter cardstock for the sun
Metallic Gold cardstock for the base/background layer

If you are getting started with Cricut cake toppers, I recommend using Recollections brand smooth, solid core cardstock. Solid core means the color runs all the way through the cardstock. The smooth cardstock is the easiest to cut with a Cricut machine. I love how the Recollections brand comes in packs with multiple color shades.

Secrets you must know to make cake toppers: Cricut blades

Which Cricut blades do you need to make cake toppers? It depends.

Out of the box, any Cricut machine can cut cardstock using the provided fine point blade comes. That might be all you need.

But what if you want to make more complex cake topper projects like shakers? Or use other materials.

The Cricut Maker 3 has the ability to use the knife blade. You might be surprised to learn that the knife blade can and should be used with cake toppers.

Surprised?? Keep reading my friend.

When making a shaker cake topper, a space or compartment is created for the glitter or sequins to ‘shake’. One way to make the space for the shaker is with craft foam.

A cake topper secret no one told you is that the knife blade is the best at cutting craft foam. Don’t worry if you have an Explore Air 3, the deep point blade will cut craft foam as well.

The other common Cricut machine blade I use is a scoring tool:

scoring stylus for Cricut Explore Air 3 or Cricut Maker 3
scoring wheel for Cricut Maker 3 only

Secrets you must know to make cake toppers: Skip the Elmers glue

Much like the construction paper, the glue makes a difference. Believe it or not – all glue is not created equal. That Elmer’s school glue you used as a kid won’t work as nicely on cardstock. That is because school glue is very watery and will wrinkle cardstock.

For that reason, I use a glue made specifically for papercrafts, dries clear and comes with a precision tip for super tiny areas.

The precision tip makes it really easy to control the amount and flow of the glue.

Here are two glue options that work well for cake toppers:

I love that both of these glue options come with precision tips. The alternative is buying a separate glue applicator with a precision tip and transferring your glue into the new bottle.

The one Cricut tool you must have for cake toppers

A Brayer.

Layered paper crafts like cake toppers use lots of cardstock. Rolling your brayer over your cardstock will ensure the whole sheet is well secured to the mat. Even if your mat isn’t as sticky as it used to be, the brayer will make up for that by ensuring every inch of material is secure and no air bubbles are hiding.

12 Tips to Make Cake Toppers with Cricut

What machine do I need to create cake toppers with Cricut?

Any Cricut machine that can cut cardstock can be used to make cake toppers. The Cricut Joy will be more challenging due to the cut size limitation of 4.5 inches wide. Both the Cricut Explore Air 2 and the Cricut Maker models have a max cut size of 11.5 by 11.5 inches. And the Cricut Explore Air 3 and Maker 3 can cut 11.7 inches by 12 feet with smart materials like smart Paper Sticker Cardstock.

What kind of paper works best for cake toppers?

Cardstock. Choosing the right paper makes a difference in the quality of the personalized cake topper. The brand and thickness (aka weight) depends on the theme and design. Thicker cardstock helps make cake toppers made with Cricut sturdy, however, small details are easier to cut with thinner paper. Cake topper creator, Ashleigh uses a variety of cardstock ranging from 110lb (300 gsm) to 65lb (180 gsm) and she picks up whatever is available at her local craft store or on Amazon.

My personal favorite is to use cardstock without a white core and the color all the way through. Using solid core paper is important with rolled paper flowers because the white becomes visible along the edges. The recollections cardstock is a great quality solid color cardstock.

What is the best stick used to make cake toppers with Cricut?

Lollipop/Cake Pop sticks are Ashleigh’s favorite. She uses 8 in (20 cm) white lollipop sticks for all her cake toppers. This length works well for tall multi-layered cakes. Cakes with less layers or sheet cakes may need shorter sticks. Luckily, lollipop sticks can be trimmed easily with scissors.

Another option for cake topper sticks are acrylic lollipop sticks. The acrylic sticks are a little more expensive and crystal clear. These would also work well to make matching drink stirs too.

What is the best glue and adhesive to use to make cake toppers with Cricut?

Glue with a precision tip and double sided adhesive foam. Use adhesive foam in between layers to create dimension for your cake topper. Foam adhesive can be cut down easily with scissors to fit very small areas.

Another option is a good quality paper glue with a precision tip. A precision tip glue is helpful for tiny pieces or for areas that looks best flat. A good quality paper glue will dry clear, not wrinkle your paper and spreads easily.

Lastly, to secure the stick to the paper cake topper, use hot glue. A glue gun with a small tip is helpful to control the amount of glue and not flood your DIY cake topper with gobs of glue.

What are the best tools used to create cake toppers with Cricut?

Beyond a Cricut machine, there are other tools that make a big difference with paper crafts in general: brayer and Cricut basic tools with reverse tweezers and spatula.

Reverse tweezers are designed with a reverse grip feature allowing them to grab material and stay secure without constant pressure applied. Reverse tweezers act as like an extension of your fingers and make placing small paper cuts more precise. And the spatula is helpful to peel off cardstock from the mat.

For a long time I was not convinced a brayer was necessary, and then I got one. A brayer makes a noticeable difference for how well your cardstock sticks to the Cricut mats, which then leads to better cuts especially for the most difficult little pieces and the most textured glitter cardstock.

What special materials are used to create glitter shaker cake toppers with Cricut?

Adhesive foam sheets, acetate and chunky glitter. I create glitter shakers the easy way using adhesive foam sheets and the offset feature in Cricut Design Space. What is the best size to make cake toppers with Cricut?

The size of the cake topper depends on the size of the cake. Cake Topper creator, Ashleigh sizes all her Cricut cake toppers at 6 inches in width because a lot of the local cake makers use 6-8 inch cakes, allowing the cake topper fit well without being over powering.

If you are making a Cricut cake topper for cupcakes, it may be necessary to size down the design to around 3 or 4 inches and reduce the length of the cake topper stick.

What are the best fonts to use for cake toppers?

Thick fonts. The best fonts for making cake toppers with Cricut have thick letters with clean edges for easy cutting. Thin fonts are more likely to rip and make the overall cake topper more flimsy. Cake topper creator Ashleigh uses her favorite font ‘Hello Valentica’ for her Cricut cake toppers.

Script fonts are helpful for making cake toppers with Cricut because the letters can be connected together within Cricut Design Space using the Weld tool. Welding the letters together keeps the whole word connected during cutting and makes for easy placement on the cake topper design instead of placing each letter separately for non-connected fonts.

What is the secret to cutting glitter cardstock to make cake toppers with Cricut?

A lightly used StrongGrip Mat. Cut glitter cardstock using material settings of glitter cardstock with more pressure and the fine point blade (which is the blade included with all Cricut machines). Place the glitter cardstock on a lightly used StrongGrip mat to ensure a good grip.

Alternatively, use a green StandardGrip mat and tape down all the edges with painters tape.

Which is the best Cricut mat to make personalized cake toppers?

Blue LightGrip Mat: light/thin cardstock, printer paper, construction paper

Green StandardGrip Mat: medium cardstock, textured paper, patterned paper

Purple StrongGrip Mat: Thick cardstock, Glitter cardstock

What is the best way to ship cake toppers to customers?

Cake topper creator, Ashleigh ships out her custom cake toppers by backing them onto study board and securing with bubble wrap. Then the package gets added to a hard backed large envelope for the best protection.

I tape my cake toppers to a backing board using washi tape. Then I add the board with cake topper to clear sleeve storage bags.

Should Cricut cake toppers be double sided?

Optional. Ashleigh only adds a back to her cake toppers when requested by the customer.

The advantage of making a cake topper double sided is covering the stick/glue and having a nice finish on the back. The disadvantage is using more materials when the back of the cake topper may not be seen at all.
