Check out these charming holiday cupcake topper flags for Santa’s North Pole Bakery. They’re adorable and super easy to create using your Cricut machine. With these little flags poking out of the snowy white icing, they remind me of my favorite Christmas movie – Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

The easy Christmas Cupcake Topper project combines Cricut cuts and pens to make cute mini signs for the cupcakes at your holiday party this year. I used a heavyweight cardstock with a smooth finish and a subtle shimmer on both sides along with a striped paper straw to achieve this look.

In this easy Christmas Cupcake Topper tutorial, I’ll guide you step by step on setting up this project in Cricut Design Space, using Cricut pens with your machine, and assembling the toppers. This project is compatible with any Cricut machine from the Cricut Joy to the Cricut Maker model.

Cupcake toppers are versatile and can be used for various purposes beyond cupcakes.

How to upload the Easy Christmas Cupcake Topper into Cricut Design Space

To begin this project, start by uploading the provided cut file. After downloading the .zip file, unzip it by double-clicking and accessing the folder. Inside, you’ll find the license and the cut file itself. The cut file is recognizable as it begins with ‘SVG’ and is named ‘SVG-HolidayCupcakeTopperFlag.svg’.

You have two options to add it to Cricut Design Space: either drag and drop it directly or use the green browse button to locate the file.

When you enter the “prepare to upload” screen, you might notice the cut file’s font appears a bit faded and unusual, but rest assured, it’s all intact. Trust the process and proceed by clicking the green “upload” button.

You will notice on the upload screen that the cut file displays correctly. Select the design and click “add to canvas”.

How to prepare your Christmas Cupcake Topper

After uploading your design to Cricut Design Space, the first step is to check its size. For mine, I kept it at 2.6 inches wide, but feel free to adjust it as needed. I recommend not going any larger but you could size down to 2.3 inches wide. Then, ungroup the project for making adjustments.

Start by changing the color of the shapes to match your cardstock. Following that, choose the text layers and head to the Operations menu to pick the Pen function, which instructs the Cricut machine to draw with a Cricut Pen. A similar Cricut font is BFC Autumn Woodland in upper case.

Next, we need to connect the text to the shapes. To simplify this process, hide the base layer image, then select one shape and its corresponding text, and click “attach.” Repeat for each shape, linking all three shapes and words together.

Moving on, unhide the base layer, select all, and group together the whole design for easier handling. Duplicate the design for as many Christmas cupcake toppers as needed.

Click “Make it” to send your easy Christmas Cupcake Topper to your Cricut machine. When on the Make screen, select the material setting suitable for your cardstock by clicking “Browse all materials.”

Cutting your easy Christmas cupcake topper

Next, let’s proceed to your Cricut machine. Secure your cardstock onto a machine mat; I opted for a new, sticky blue light-grip mat for heavyweight cardstock. Smooth it down using a brayer to ensure a strong grip, then load the mat into your Cricut machine.

Now, it’s time to attach the Cricut pen. Open clamp A and firmly insert the Cricut pen, ensuring it clicks into place. Look for the arrow guiding you to insert the pen into the holder, then secure clamp A.

The fine point blade should already be in clamp B, which comes with all Cricut machines. Here’s where the magic happens: the machine seamlessly transitions between drawing with the pen and cutting because Cricut can do both functions during the same cut cycle.

Once the cuts are done, unload the mat, and remove the pen just as you inserted it.

Finally, carefully remove the cardstock off the mat.

Assemble your Santa's North Pole Bakery cupcake topper

Now, it’s time to put together your simple Christmas cupcake toppers. Arrange all the pieces and dry assemble your project, which means to assemble without adhesive. Keep in mind that it can be a bit tricky to determine the correct orientation of the base layer, especially if your cardstock looks the same on both sides.

The text banners should perfectly align and fit right into their designated spots. If they don’t, you may need to adjust the base layer until they line up correctly.

Start by attaching a strip of slim double-sided tape to the center of the base layer, which will hold the straw. Alternatively, you can use glue as an option. Carefully position the straw along the center of the base layer.

Then, take some extra-tall adhesive foam tabs or squares, attaching one to each side of the straw on all three banners. If you don’t have these extra-tall tabs, you can double up on regular foam squares to achieve the needed height, which should match the straw’s thickness to prevent the text banners from bending much when placed on top.

After fixing all the foam tabs in place, peel off the backing to expose the adhesive.

Now, position each text banner onto the holiday cupcake topper flag, making sure they align properly.With the three text banners in place, your easy Christmas cupcake topper is ready for use. If needed, you can easily trim the paper straws to the desired size using scissors.

Step-by-Step Guide to Making Your Own Personalized Family Christmas Tree Ornament with Cricut

Create a one-of-a-kind keepsake with this Personalized Family Christmas Tree Ornament, an easy DIY project perfect for family, friends, and neighbors. Surprisingly, I crafted these Family Christmas Tree Ornaments with Cricut using lightweight cardstock. Each ornament requires just two sheets of cardstock, and I specifically chose a smooth-textured type for more precise cuts on these moderately intricate designs.

Throughout this tutorial, I’ll show you simple ideas to strengthen and reinforce lightweight cardstock to improve the durability and ensure your ornament will last for years to come. Also, I will walk you through the tools needed within Cricut Design Space to transform text and achieve the tree shape for this Family Christmas Tree Ornament.

Here's What You'll Need To Make the Family Christmas Tree Ornament with Cricut

Prepare your Family Christmas Tree Ornament in Cricut Design Space

Open Cricut Design Space and start a new canvas.

Click on the text tool and type the name of the first person. You’ll want to use all caps and use a font that is uniform. This will make building out the multiple tiers of the ornament easier and look cleaner. I used the Cricut font Futura LT Condensed Extra Bold for my project.

Once the first name is done, duplicate it to create the second name in the family tree. Change the name to the next person and repeat that process for all the names you want to add.

Transform names into a tree shape using Cricut Design Space

There are a variety of tools inside cricut design space that will help transform names to create a shape.

First, adjust the size of each name to make them increasingly larger as the size of the tree widens. To do this, make sure the ratio lock is closed and click the up or down arrow on the width or height to adjust the size. The ratio lock closed means that the design will adjust both the height and widge at the same time when you adjust either one of those variables.

Once you have made adjustments to the text, check the shape of the tree by selecting all of the names, then Align, Center Horizontally.

Next, try adjusting the letter spacing. Use the update and down arrow of the letter space to change the amount of space in between the letters. For mine, I need to condense the second name to make it smaller. For some of the other names, I’ll use the letter space tool in the opposite direction to make the space between the letters larger.

Once you are happy with the names, sizes and placement, next we need to add the year as the trunk of the tree. To do this, I duplicated one of the names and typed in the year. Move the year to the bottom and make any size adjustments you need.

Next, add a star to the top of the tree. Select a star from the shapes tool in Cricut Design space. Place the star at the top of the tree and size it to coordinate well with the rest of the project.

Use the offset tool to add another layer to this star. With the star highlighted, click offset and adjust the slider to create an offset that you like. I went with a thin offset.

Next we will make a narrow bar to put under each name which will connect each of the names on the family tree. Select a square shape from the free shapes section. With the square selected, click on the size ratio lock to unlock it. Adjust the size of the square to create a long, narrow rectangle shape.

Move the thin bar under one of the names. A trick to adjust the bar without changing the height is to check that the ratio lock is unlocked and adjust the width only. This way the height stays the same and the thin bar is sized perfectly for each name in the Family Christmas Tree Ornament.

Repeat the process by duplicating the bar and to place under each name, then adjust the length to fit the name. The goal is to ensure each letter is connected.

NOTE The next time I made one of these, I would do one thing differently which is to add a bar under the year as well. This would give more space to apply double sided adhesive foam. I’ll show you in the next section the challenges I had adding foam to these small numbers.

Every time you change the design be sure to use the align tool again to center the design.

Before uniting together the design, change the color to white which helps to see the outlines of the text and shapes better. Do a final check to make sure the text and bars touch for each level.

Make any last adjustments to align text and bars to ensure they overlap just enough to weld together into one.

How to Unite and Undo Unite in Cricut Design Space

Once you are satisfied, select the whole design again and unselect the star. Then click Combine, Unite.

UNITE Unite joins two or more shapes together into one new shape but also allows you to easily undo a united design.

After the Unite function is applied, the design is all one layer and at the top of the layers panel. It looks like we lost the star but it’s under the design. Find the star on the layers panel and use the arrange tool to bring the star to the front.

Take a look at the united design and see if any adjustments need to be made.

To undo the unite, click the combine tool again and select Undo Unite. Now, you can make adjustments before redoing the Unite to combine all the shapes together.

When you are happy with the design, repeat the process of selecting all and uniting the design.

At this point our design of the Family Christmas Tree Ornament with Cricut is almost ready to be cut but there’s one more essential step. To ensure the durability of this Cricut-made Family Christmas Tree Ornament, we need to reinforce the cardstock. The simplest method is to increase the cardstock’s thickness, and you don’t necessarily need to purchase thicker cardstock.

To achieve this, create additional layers that we can later combine with glue to increase the cardstock’s thickness. Replicate the united layer until you have a total of four layers for your Family Christmas Tree Ornament. You can also attach the layers together to maintain their alignment on the cutting mat.

When you are ready, send your project to the Cricut machine. Cut out all the layers in the cardstock of your choice.

Assemble the Family Christmas Tree Ornament with Cricut

After cutting out all the pieces, the first step is to combine the layers together. Use your preferred paper crafting glue and apply it across one of the layers. Cover the entire layer lightly with glue and then overlay another layer on top to create a single, thick layer.

Repeat this process for the remaining two layers. Consequently, you will have two fused together layers or thick layers.

Before proceeding, attach a string or ribbon for hanging the Family Christmas Tree Ornament. Secure the string or ribbon with hot glue on one of the layers. This layer will serve as the inside or bottom, and the glue will be covered by the top layer of the ornament, leaving the string in between the ornament’s layers.

Between the two thick layers, apply trimmed sections of extra-tall, double-sided adhesive foam tape. Use scissors or a craft knife to tailor the foam sections to the desired size. The more foam you incorporate into the ornament, the sturdier it will be.

Towards the bottom of the Family Christmas Tree Ornament, attach foam to the year. You may need to cut small sections of foam to size using a craft knife.

Once all the foam is in place, peel off the backing sheet from the foam. To help with the alignment of the top layer, apply a small dab of glue to each section of foam tape. This allows for a bit of maneuvering time to ensure perfect alignment between the layers.

Lastly, attach the star to the top of the Family Christmas Tree Ornament made with Cricut. You can attach the star using either glue or foam.

And with that, your Family Christmas Tree Ornament with Cricut is complete. In this tutorial, we practiced with tools in Cricut Design space to transform and shape text. Next, we applied simple techniques to strengthen cardstock to create a sturdy paper ornament.

I’m excited to make more ornaments. These make the perfect finishing touch for holiday gifts.

How to upload the design into Cricut Design Space

Start this project by uploading the cut file. The filename is SVG-MermaidTail.svg

Click on Upload which is on the left side of the screen. Then click Upload Image. You can either click the browse button or drag and drop the cut file into the Cricut Design Space window.

Click upload. Then select the design so that the green box is around it and click Add to Canvas.

How to prepare the mermaid tail cupcake topper

Once you have your free mermaid tail cupcake topper design in Cricut Design Space, you’re almost set to bring it to life. Here’s what to do next:

Double-check the size of your cake topper to make sure it fits your cupcake just right. Typically, I go for a width of 2-3 inches, but since this design is a bit narrower at the bottom, feel free to opt for a larger size if it suits your cupcake better.
When you’re all set and your topper size is spot on, click on “make it” to begin the cutting process with your trusty Cricut machine.

This crafty project is pretty thrifty on materials. You’ll need four different colors of cardstock, and it’s a fantastic way to use up those leftover scraps. Just ensure you’ve selected the correct cardstock settings on your Cricut before cutting out all the different layers.

Assemble your mermaid tail cupcake topper

Now that you’ve got all the pieces ready, let’s put together your cute mermaid cupcake topper. Here’s what to do step by step:

Begin by gluing the clam shell outline to the base layer of the clam shell. Do the same for the mermaid tail and its outline.

To give your topper some extra oomph and dimension, you can use foam tabs or tape to secure the clam to the mermaid tail. If you don’t have foam tabs, regular glue will work just fine.

Now, let’s get ready to add the stick. For these cake toppers, I used an acrylic cake pop stick. Simply snip it in half using a pair of jewelry wire cutters. Then attach the stick to the back of the mermaid tail cupcake topper using hot glue. And that’s it!

Your mermaid tail cupcake topper is now ready to make a splash at your party!

How to make the Adventure Awaits Cake Topper

Start this project by opening a blank canvas in Cricut Design Space.
Click on “Upload” and upload the included ‘SVG-AdventureGlobeCakeTopper’ file
Double check the size of the cake topper design
Click on “make it” to prepare the design for cutting.
Select your desired material and adjust the cut settings as needed.
Place your cardstock on a blue light grip mat.
Use a brayer to roll over the cardstock, ensuring that it is well secured to the mat.
Load the mat into the Cricut machine and press the blinking load button.
Follow the on-screen prompts in Cricut Design Space to guide the cutting process.
Press the blinking button to start the cut.
When the cutting is finished, use a Cricut spatula to help unload the mat and keep the cardstock flat.
Use a scraper tool to remove any remaining pieces from the mat.
Repeat steps 6-12 for the additional colors or cuts needed for the project.
Gather all the pieces of your cake topper: the base globe layer, text, banner, and airplane.
Start by assembling the world by gluing the white layer on top of the blue layer.
Then glue the green layer on top of the white layer.
Add the assembled layers to the brown globe base layer with adhesive foam.
Assemble the airplane by gluing the gray layer to the blue layer.
Add adhesive foam to the airplane and add to the white wind gust strip.
Place the airplane and wind gust on the cake topper with adhesive foam to make it look more three-dimensional.
Assemble ‘Adventure awaits’ by gluing the text to the white offset layer.
Assemble the banner by gluing the large yellow layer to the white layer.
Apply adhesive foam to the back of the bottom and top pieces of the banner to create dimension.
Add the text ‘Adventure awaits’ to the banner using adhesive foam.
Add the assembled banner to the cake topper with adhesive foam, using the shapes on the edges to guide placement.
Use a hot glue gun to add a clear acrylic cake pop stick to the back of the cake topper.

What should you think about before shopping for cake topper sticks?

The best sticks for your cake topper may depend more on the cake topper and the cake.

For example, a bright white stick may stand out a lot against a dark colored cake and cake topper. On the other hand, if you are planning a large cake topper with lots of layers and add-ons, you want a sturdy stick that can hold the topper steady.

Best sticks for cake toppers that you have at home

All of these cake topper stick options can be found in your kitchen and, better yet, they are all eco-friendly: biodegradable or made from sustainable resources.

Paper straws

Colorful paper straws are stiff enough to work as cake topper sticks. These can be easily trimmed to any size needed.

I’ve recently discovered a new favorite choice for sticks – the Acrylic Cakesicle Sticks. These sticks are very sturdy, and what sets them apart is their flat, like a popsicle stick. I’ve found them to be a perfect fit when placing them between layers to hide the stick for a more professional look. To achieve this look, use foam tabs between the layers to create space and secure the stick in between the layers.

Acrylic cake pop sticks

These are thin, clear acrylic and have a clean, chic vibe that I love.

If you are like me, you love to save special projects. These sticks are easy to clean and can be reused. I save my kids birthday cake toppers in their memory books.

The acrylic cake pop sticks are thin and work great for lightweight cake toppers like this sunshine cake topper. Oftentimes, I use two of these thin sticks for a cake topper – one on each side of the topper. I skip these sticks for heavy cake toppers like large shaker projects because they are little flimsy. For cupcake toppers, I cut acrylic cake pop sticks in half for a shorter length.

Paper Cake Pop Sticks

Despite the word paper in the name, paper cake pop sticks are very sturdy and can hold large cake toppers well. The paper is more like dense cardboard. These sticks are not flimsy at all and are a little thicker compared to the acrylic cake pop sticks.

I have used the paper cake pop sticks for 6 inch wide shaker cake toppers and they work great.

Here's What You'll Need To Make a light up cake topper

In addition to your regular cake topper materials like cardstock, sticks, and glue, you’ll also need some lights. My preferred lights for making light up cake toppers are balloon lights.

These multicolor LED balloon lights are really small and lightweight, but they shine brightly and even change colors. Moreover, they come with a little tab on the back that you can pull out to turn on the light. And if you want to save the battery, you can insert the tab back in.

Above all, using these small lights is easy – just a bit of hot glue and a dedicated spot in your cake topper design to place the light. Although I haven’t used these lights continuously, the product description indicates they can last over 48 hours, which is more than enough time for a party or event.

How to design light up cake toppers

Jump over to Cricut Design Space, and I’ll show you an easy way to add balloon lights to your cake toppers. In this example, I have a 6-inch circle I am using as the bottom base layer of a cake topper.

Now, for the balloon lights, we need to make a small hole for the light to go in. Use the shapes tool on the left side of Cricut Design Space to select a circle shape. Then adjust the size of the circle to 0.5 inches. This is just the right size for the balloon light.

Next, place this little circle where you want the light to be on your cake topper. Now is the time to decide if you want the light to be hidden behind something else or to shine right out. Once you’re happy with the spot, select both circles and click “slice.” As a result, this creates a dedicated space for the balloon light to sit perfectly.

Other Design considerations for light up cake toppers

If you decide to place some of your design in front of the balloon light, like I did in my light up cake topper project, remember that the light will stick out a bit. Consequently, you’ll need to raise the part of the design that’s in front of the light to make room for the light extending from the back.

As an example, one way to do this is by making a shaker cake topper, whether you include the shaker pieces or not. For that reason, I made a shaker topper with a deep side wall and no foam for my project. This gives enough space for the light to fit comfortably.

How to add the light

Once you’ve got all your pieces cut with your Cricut machine, it’s time to put your cake topper together. Remember, the spot for the light should be on the bottom layer of the cake topper. You’ll want it accessible from the back so you can add the light once the rest of the project is assembled. Next, proceed with assembling the light up cake topper project – minus the light.

Immediately following the assembly process, you can add the light. To begin, put a ring of hot glue on the back of the cake topper, right around the hole for the light. Then, place the balloon light into the hole. It won’t go all the way through, but it’ll sit nicely inside. Lastly, allow the hot glue to set, and your light is all set to shine!

Create the perfect Casita door card

Let’s start with the Casita Card, inspired by the vibrant Colombian towns and the magical Casita door from the movie Encanto. This papercraft project has layers of colorful goodness, which your Cricut machine will cut effortlessly.

If you’re planning a DIY Encanto Party with Cricut or any party, you’ll find this cake topper post helpful. It shares my favorite tips and tricks to add characters to your cake toppers.

As a quick overview, to create a character cake topper with Cricut, you’ll need to use the Print Then Cut feature.

Here’s how it works: First, print the characters using your home printer directly from Cricut Design Space. Then, load the printed sheet into your Cricut machine and let it cut out the image with amazing precision. The machine uses special marks around the printed image to know where to make the cuts.

Just keep in mind that not all Cricut machines have the Print Then Cut feature. It’s available for Cricut Explore Air 2 or 3, as well as the Cricut Maker or Maker 3 models. The Cricut Joy can cut and draw, but it doesn’t have the Print Then Cut feature.

Recreate the Encanto miracle candle

The Encanto Miracle candle represents the magical powers of the Madrigal family and is a symbol of hope and inspiration in the movie Encanto. Recreating the Encanto Miracle candle is a quick Cricut project with this free butterfly cut file.

Jump on over to Spot of Tea Designs to create a candle wrap that resembles the magical candle from the movie. Add some shimmer and sparkle with Gold Holographic Sparkle Vinyl for an extra touch of enchantment.

Casita door card Instructions

Once you have the casita door card cut file, open Cricut Design Space and start a new project. Upload the provided cut file by clicking on the “Upload” button. Once uploaded, you’ll see both the card and envelope designs. Click “Add to Canvas” to place them on your project.

Now, let’s prepare the design. Double-check the size, which should be about 20 inches wide. Ungroup the elements to work with them individually.

To add score lines to the envelope, select the red rectangle and choose “Score” from the Operation menu. Attach the score lines to the envelope shape. For the card structure, select the center line and apply the “Score” operation.

If you’d like to add a faux engraved initial on the door knob, use the text tool to type the initial. Choose a writing font, like BFC Ballgame, and change the operation to “Score.” Resize the letter and attach it to the door knob layer.

Now it’s time to cut. Select the type of cardstock you’re using and load it onto the machine mat. Make sure to add the scoring stylus when needed. Follow the prompts on the screen and let the Cricut machine work its magic.

After cutting, assemble the card by adding the brown piece to the inside and arranging the floral garland and butterfly. Fold the score lines using a paper folder for crisp creases. Glue the white card insert and attach it to the bottom of the card.

Add the door knob and other details to the front of the card using glue. If desired, add craft foam to give the door knob dimension.

Finish by folding and gluing the envelope using the score lines. Now your Cricut Casita door card is complete and ready to impress!

When I first started making shaker cake toppers, I wasn’t sure which Cricut blade to use for cutting craft foam. You see, shakers need some space between the top and bottom parts, so tiny bits can shake inside. That’s where craft foam comes in handy. Luckily, your Cricut machine can cut craft foam with precise accuracy – as long as you are using the right blades and techniques.

What is the Maximum Thickness of Foam that Cricut can Cut?

The amazing thing about Cricut is that it can cut materials that are up to 2.4 mm thick. When it comes to craft foam, which is usually around 2 mm thick, you’re in luck! As long as the craft foam fits under the machine roller bar, you’re all set to go. So, you can easily cut craft foam with accuracy and precision without any worries.

Best tips and tricks to cut craft foam with Cricut for shaker cake toppers

When it comes to cutting craft foam with your Cricut machine for shaker cake toppers, there are a few helpful tips and tricks to keep in mind. First, use a sticky mat, such as a green or purple mat, that still has a lot of stickiness left on it. Craft foam is thick, so you want to ensure it stays in place during the cutting process. To secure the foam even more, use a brayer to press it firmly onto the mat.

It’s important to note that the small white rings on the roller bar of your Cricut machine are called star wheels. While they’re great for preventing materials from shifting, they can leave track marks on thicker materials like craft foam. Be sure to move the star wheels off to the side to avoid contact with the craft foam.

Lastly, in Cricut Design Space, use the Mat Preview screen to check that your images don’t extend beyond the boundaries of your craft foam. This way, you can ensure a clean and precise cut.

What material settings do you use in Cricut Design Space for craft foam?

When setting the material for cutting craft foam on your Cricut machine, there are a few important steps to follow. In general, I recommend using the material setting of craft foam with more pressure. However, when using the rotary blade, you’ll need to select the material setting for flex foam with more pressure.

To set the material, start by clicking on “Browse All Materials” in Cricut Design Space. Then, search for and select “craft foam.” Click “Done” to confirm. Next, update the pressure setting to “More” to ensure a successful cut. In Design Space, you’ll notice that the deep point blade is listed for craft foam, but if you prefer, you can also select “Edit Tools” to switch to the knife blade for cutting.

I hope by following these steps, you’ll be able to set the material setting correctly and achieve precise results when cutting craft foam with your Cricut machine.

What blade do you use to cut craft foam with Cricut for shaker cake toppers?

I tested four different Cricut blades with craft foam.

Deep point blade: Compatible with Cricut Maker and Cricut Explore Machines
Knife Blade: Compatible with Cricut Maker/3 Machines
Rotary Blade: Compatible with Cricut Maker/3 Machines
Fine Point Blade: Included with all Cricut machines

The results are in!

Deep point blade

Cut the craft foam cleanly on the first try without any issues.

Knife blade

Cut the craft foam cleanly on the first try without any issues.

Rotary blade

Cut the craft foam on the first try and left behind small cuts at corners where the blade overlapped.

Fine Point Blade

Did not cut the craft foam at all.

Based on my test, I concluded that the Deep point blade and Knife blade are the best to cut craft foam with Cricut for shaker cake toppers. Both blades provided clean and precise cuts of thick craft foam. The Deep point blade works well on both the Cricut Explore models as well as the Cricut Maker models. The Knife blade is only compatible with the Cricut Maker model machines.

How to upload the Outer Space Birthday Cake topper into Cricut Design Space

Start this project by uploading the cut file. The filename is SVG-SpaceCakeTopper.svg

Click on Upload which is on the left side of the screen. Then click Upload Image. You can either click the browse button or drag and drop the cut file into the Cricut Design Space window.

Click upload. Then select the design so that the green box is around it and click Add to Canvas.

How to prepare the Outer Space Birthday Cake topper

First, you’ll put the Outer Space Birthday Cake topper on the Cricut Design space canvas. Then click on the text tool to add the birthday kid’s name and age. You can make a second layer using the offset tool. Put the name on the banner and the age in the middle of the cake topper.

Next, double check the size of the cake topper and press “make it” when you’re ready to start cutting with your Cricut machine.

This project uses 6 or 7 different colors of cardstock (depending on the colors used for the stars and rocket ship exhaust). After picking the right setting for your cardstock, cut out all the different layers. If you’re using glitter cardstock or foil board, you may need to search for the right setting under ‘browse all materials’.

Assemble your Outer Space Birthday Cake topper

To begin assembling your cake topper, start by putting all the pieces together without glue to make sure everything looks good. Then, use foam tabs to stick the two base layers together.

Next, assemble the moon and rocket ship. The moon consists of two layers and the rocket ship has 4 layers. Each layer stacks on top of the other. Add foam tabs inbetween the layers.

Then assemble the astronaut on the moon. This section is assembled in the same way as the rocket ship. Each layer stacks on top of the next. For the top most layer, which is the flag, secure with glue.

Move on to the banner and stars. Both the banner and stars are two layers stacked with foam tabs. The inside of the star has pointy edges, while the outside layer has more rounded edges.

Once everything is assembled, use glue or foam to add each section to its designated spot on the cake topper. To finish off your Outer Space Birthday Cake topper, add a paper cake pop stick to the back with hot glue.

Today, I want to show you how to make really fun no foam shaker cake toppers. This design includes deep side walls which allows for a lot of space between the bottom and top layers. In fact, these cake toppers have half an inch of space for you to fill up with anything you like.

This project is a great cake topper base that can be dressed up for any theme or celebration. Once we finish making it, we’re going to test out 5 unique items as filler for the shaker. I hope it gives you some ideas for your own cake toppers. Download the free SVG file to get started.

What can I put inside no foam shaker cake toppers?

The neat thing about these no foam shaker cake toppers is that they have deep side walls. In fact, it’s got half an inch of space for you to fill up with anything you like. So far I have added a variety of items into the deep side walled shakers such as:

Chunky Glitter
Candy
Legos
Large Party Confetti
Fuzzy 1/2″ Pom Poms
Rolled Flowers Cut From My Cricut Machine

Materials And Tools Needed To Make No Foam Shaker Cake Toppers

No foam shaker cake topper cut file
Cricut machine
Cricut machine mat
Scoring wheel or scoring stylus
Cardstock (at least one sheet of 12×12 cardstock for the strips)
Acetate
Craft glue
Shaker filler of your choice

The first thing we need to do is get the SVG cut file we’ll use to cut out our project. Once you’ve opened Cricut Design Space, start a new project and click on the “upload” button to add the design file. Follow through the upload process to get the cut file onto your canvas.

If you need to, zoom out so you can see the whole project. We want to make sure the project is the right size, so click on one of the big round shapes and make sure it is 6.8 inches.

Now, we need to make a few adjustments. This project has score lines on the two strips, but Cricut Design Space doesn’t allow us to upload them as score lines. So, we’ll change the lines from cut to score.

To do this, select one of the lines and hold down the shift key, then click on the next line. Keep selecting the lines until they’re all chosen. Then, change the operation to score. Now you can see that the lines have changed to dashed on the strips.

Next, select the strips and the score lines and click on “attach”. This connects all the score lines to the correct shapes.

Before we move on, now is a good time to adjust any of the colors if we want to. We’re ready to move on to the next step of the no foam shaker cake topper project.

Before we jump ahead, one quick review of the design. The light blue circle is the window of the no foam shaker cake toppers. This shape will be cut using acetate.

The two strips and the large circle are cut with cardstock and together those will create the base structure of the cake topper to include the shaker. The strips will be used to create space between the bottom cardstock and top acetate. The strips are just about 11.5 inches long and are best cut out from a sheet of 12×12 cardstock.

Finally, we have two rings that will cover up the tabs underneath and give the cake topper a nice finishing touch.

How To Assemble No Foam Shaker Cake Toppers

Now that you have all your pieces cut out, let’s put the no foam shaker cake topper together. Grab the two strips and line them up straight with the pretty side facing up. Glue them together using the tab at one end.

Start at one side of the long paper strip and fold over each tab one at a time. Then, curve the paper strip into a ring and glue the tab at the end to close the circle.

Now it’s time to create the shaker part. Apply glue around the inside edges of the tabs you just folded over and place the circle base inside the paper strip ring you just created. Make sure it’s well adhered by checking the back to see if all the tabs are flat.

Next, fold over the remaining tabs around the outside edge and make sure they’re flat and even.

Moving on to the fun part – time to add your shaker filler! You have a lot of space to work with, so go wild.

Once you’ve added your filler, add glue around the edges and place the acetate sheet on top. Make sure it’s secure.

Finally, add the two rings to finish it off. Start with the thicker ring and then add the thin one. Now you can add a name, age or sentiment to the front and a cake pop stick to the back. And voila, your no foam shaker cake topper is complete!

How to prepare rolled flowers for this project

Your cricut machine can help you make paper flowers for this project. I searched the Cricut image library for 3D flowers to find a design. Size your paper flowers between 3 and 4 inches wide to get the right size for the no foam shaker cake topper.

Another tip: Sometimes cutting small rolled paper flower designs can be tough. Be sure to use a brayer to make sure your cardstock is secured well to the mat. Also, you can try the material setting of cardstock (for intricate cuts) for better results.
